Cynthia DavisCynthia Davis spent reams of paper, countless pens and most of middle school before discovering she had nothing to write about. Ink splotched and paper cut, she emerged from a pile of tattered notebooks to become an art teacher, drama instructor, youth leader, wife, mother, and, most recently, a graduate student. Today, her family, students, a talking bird, naughty Labradors, and a pair of kittens provide her with material that has appeared in newspapers and magazines across the country.Davis currently works as a freelance journalist for the Tribune subsidiary Daily Press in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Her human interest feature stories reach nearly 100,000 subscribers. She enjoys temporarily taking on the adventures of her subjects and making their stories part of her own. Davis’ work as a journalist was jumpstarted by a winning non-fiction essay in a Tribune-sponsored contest. She went on to write an inspirational and often humorous column for the publication, including a quote that grabbed the attention of Guideposts and was reprinted in their forum featuring “uplifting quotes from today’s newsmakers.” Currently pursuing a Masters of Arts degree in Teaching with endorsements in secondary English and journalism through Christopher Newport University, Davis enjoys using her teacher training and curriculum development skills to benefit school, community, and bookstore writing programs. The 2002 winner of Christopher Newport University’s Edith Thompson award for juvenile fiction, Davis coordinated the university’s annual writer’s conference in 2005. Her work has appeared in YS and the literary magazine, Beacon. Her background in set design and acting led to the publication of Dare to Be Different, a 2001 release by Contemporary Drama Service. Davis is the author of The Chrysalis, a 2001 novel by Greenroom Books, a publishing company she created with her husband to fill the void for positive voices in young adult literature. An adventurer at heart and in travel, her experiences with teen girls have spanned the distance from her living room to South Africa and selected outposts in between. Current Projects
